Crying in the Rain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crying in the Rain , also called Cryin 'In The Rain , is a song that was interpreted by the Everly Brothers in 1961 . The song was written by Carole King (music) in collaboration with Howard Greenfield (lyrics).

background

The song came about by chance through a partner swap at Aldon Music , where King and Greenfield were working at the time. Despite the commercial success of this production, this was the only song they wrote together. The recording for the single Crying in the Rain (B-side I'm not angry ; own composition under the pseudonym "Jimmy Howard") was made in 1961 by Warner Bros. Records . The song is almost two minutes long and has been covered by many interpreters, such as in 1990 by the Norwegian group a-ha , Art Garfunkel and James Taylor , in German under the titles, Back when the rain came ( Anne-Karin 1981), You should never see tears ( Karel Gott 1992) or rain in the night ( Connie Francis 1978) but also in French J'irai pleurer sous la pluie ( Richard Anthony 1962) or under the title Ik wil niet dat jij m ' n tranen ziet (Rudy Meyns 1995).

content

The song tells of the suffering caused by a broken heart and begins with the words “ I'll never let you see, the way my broken heart is hurtin 'me, I've got my pride and I know how to hide, all my sorrow and pain ”(German:“ I'll never let you see how my broken heart hurts me, I have my pride and I know how to hide all the suffering and pain ”) and ends in the refrain“ I ' ll do my cryin 'in the rain ”(German:“ I will shed my tears in the rain ”). The second stanza tells how great love still is, so that one waits for the cloudy sky to mix tears with rain and to give in to the lasting pain of the heart, invisible to the other. This also ends with the refrain. The third stanza is stylistically different and describes the function of storm and rain, which cannot wash away the grief, but clarifies the feelings that the separation evokes and the desire to weep openly and not to show the great pain publicly. The fourth stanza is a kind of outlook for the future. Until the grief will be over at some point, and until you can finally go into the sun smiling again, “ Some day when my cryin's done, I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun… ” you won't show the other how very hurt and continue to cry secretly in the rain. It ends with a repeated repetition of the basic statement of the refrain “ I'll do my cryin 'in the rain ”.
