Will You Love Me Tomorrow , also known as Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow , is the title of a slow fox written by the American songwriting team Carole King and Gerry Goffin . Sung by the Shirelles , the song became a number one hit in the United States in 1961 .

Shirelles version

production

By April 1960, the girl group from the USA had released eight singles , three of which had made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 . Her most recently produced track Tonight's the Night achieved the best rating to date with 39th place. For the new single, music producer Luther Dixon chose the title Will You Love Me Tomorrow by the authors Carole King (music) and Gerry Goffin (text). A demo recording by Carole King was initially not well received by the Shirelles because of their western sound. It was only when Dixon converted the song into a pop version that the group could be changed. The song was produced in November 1960 in New York's Bell Sound Recording Studios under the direction of Luther Dixon and with Carol King as arranger and was released on the single with catalog number Scepter 1211 in November 1960.

successes

Already on November 21, 1960, the title Will You Love Me Tomorrow appeared in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billbord . It started at number 87, reached the top 10 on January 9, 1961 and held the top position on January 30. The Shirelles were able to assert themselves there for two weeks, a total of 19 weeks in the Hot 100. In the hit lists of the competition magazine Cashbox , Will You Love Me Tomorrow was listed for 18 weeks and also took first place there for two weeks. In the UK, the song was released by the Top Rank record company. In the Best Sellings of the music magazine New Musical Express he reached third place, in the Official UK Charts, published in Record Retailer, Will You Love Me Tomorrow came fourth. In 1999, the title was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (The Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll).

Cover versions

Only a few contemporary single cover versions have become known in the English-speaking world. As the most prominent singer, Brenda Lee released a single from her long-playing record Emotions in April 1961 in the USA . The lesser-known US singer Jean Campbell had previously released a version on her record company Embassy. In January 1961, a single with the duo The Raindrops was released in Great Britain. All of these versions could not be placed in the hit lists. In the long-playing record sector, numerous cover versions with prominent performers were published between 1961 and 1963, such as Pat Boone (1961), Bobby Vee (1961), Ben E. King (1962), Little Eva (1962) and the Chiffons (1963). In 1968, the American male pop band The Four Seasons Will You Love Me Tomorrow re-recorded the title and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 with it. After Tom Lord , the song was in the field of jazz a . a. covered by Buddy Lucas , Sonny Stitt and Charles Earland . In 1971 the song appeared on a single by Roberta Flack . In 1995 the Bee Gees recorded the song. A newer cover version is from Amy Winehouse . It was released right after the British soul singer's untimely death and made it into the UK charts.

In Germany, the original version with the Shirelles had aroused little interest. Nevertheless, the successful German author Ralph Maria Siegel wrote a German text for Will You Love Me Tomorrow with the title Did you forget all that? The record company Electrola released this track in February 1961 on their single No. 21,746 with Rex Gildo . Although this had previously achieved a top 10 success with the cover version of Tell Laura I Love Her (The End of Love) , the adaptation of Will You Love Me Tomorrow did not get more than 45th place in the top 50 of the music magazine Musikmarkt .
