biography

In the early 1960s, the siblings Tom and Dusty Springfield founded the group The Springfields together with Tim Field in London . The repertoire consisted of folk songs, most of which were written by Tom Springfield.

The first commercial success came in September 1961 when the single Breakaway entered the UK charts and reached number 31. Two months later, Bambino was at number 16 on the English charts. As a result, the band was voted the best vocal group in 1962 by readers of the British music magazine Melody Maker .

In August 1962, the group made it into the American single charts with their version of the 1956 Wanda Jackson song Silver Threads and Golden Needles , where the song climbed to number 20. The album of the same name and the following release Dear Hearts and Gentle People were also placed in the album and single charts, but only in lower positions. After that, the formation's success focused again on the United Kingdom, where the single Island of Dreams rose to number 5 in December of that year and stayed in the charts for 26 weeks, making the song the band's biggest hit.

The group released two studio albums in the UK: Kinda Folksy (Philips UK LP BBL 7551, 1961) and Folk Songs from the Hills (Philips UK LP 632 304 BL, 1963). In the USA an alternative album version was released in 1962 with the title Silver Threads and Golden Needles (Philips US PHM 200-052).

After the trip to the USA Field left the band in February 1962 and was replaced by Mike Hurst. The single Say I Won't Be There once again made it into the English top 10 at number 5. Come On Home only made it to number 31 in the summer after a last appearance on Sunday Night at the London Palladium in October In 1963 the trio separated. Dusty Springfield then began a successful solo career, her brother worked as a songwriter , including for The Seekers , and Hurst made a name for himself as a producer for Cat Stevens and other artists.
