Anyone Who Had a Heart is the title of a pop song composed by Burt Bacharach and written by Hal David . It was published in 1963 in the USA by Dionne Warwick and in 1964 in the UK by Cilla Black . The Cilla Black version became a number one hit in the UK .

Lyricist Hal David could already look back on a number of successes, as early as the 1950s he had written song texts that landed in the US charts. Before he wrote the text for Anyone Who Had a Heart , Bobby Vinton had reached number three in the hit lists with the title Blue on Blue , written by David . In the text of Anyone Who Had a Heart , David addresses the problem of infidelity towards a loving person. “I take you back, without you I would die. You should know that I love you so much. ”The content is dealt with in 15 lines, the second verse is repeated twice.

Dionne Warwick

The production of the song Anyone Who Had a Heart with Dionne Warwick, which had previously been listed with three modest listings on the Billboard Hot 100 , took place in the Manhattan Bell Sound Recording Studios under the direction of the writing team Bacharach / David. In November 1963, the track was released by the New York record company Scepter on the single number 1262. On December 21, 1963, the title appeared for the first time in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billboard , where it started at number 77. In January, Dionne Warwick achieved the best result in the Hot 100 with eighth place. Overall, Anyone Who Had a Heart there 14 times represent better the song in the AC charts (2) and in the rhythm and blues hit list (6) was able to place. The Warwick version was exported worldwide, but only made it into the top 10 in Europe in the Netherlands and Belgium (both 4th), in Great Britain and Germany Dionne Warwick only landed 42nd in each case. In Germany this was until Heartbreaker in 1982 their first and last chart listing.

Cilla Black

Despite the poor performance of the Warwick version of Anyone Who Had a Heart in Great Britain, the British record company Parlophone decided to produce a cover version with the 20-year-old up-and-coming singer Cilla Black. This was produced under the direction of George Martin in London's Abbey Road Studios . Anyone Who Had a Heart with Cilla Black appeared in January 1964 on the Parlophone single with catalog number 5101. It was only the second record released by Cilla Black. On February 8, 1964, Cilla Black was able to place her new title in the top 50 list of the British charts for the first time. Just three weeks later she was at the top of the charts, where she was able to stay for three weeks. Cilla Black's version was also featured in foreign charts, and it was also a number one hit in Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. In the German top 40, Cilla Black came in 37th.

Petula Clark

The British Petula Clark had great success with the Bacharach / David song in 1964 with her foreign language cover versions. She was most successful with the Italian version Quelli che hanno un cuore by Giuseppe Cassia, which reached number five in the Italian charts. Ralph Bernet provided a French text with Ceux qui ont un cœur and for Spain Augusto Algueró alias C. Mapel rewrote the song as Tu no tienes corazon . The German text author Ernst Bader also wrote a text for Petula Clark, his title line reads Everything is now over . The title appeared in Germany in April 1964 on Vogue single No. 14148 and reached number 37 in German hit lists such as Cilla Black's English version.

More cover versions

In the immediate temporal context, single recordings of Anyone Who Had a Heart were produced in Great Britain with largely unknown singers such as Joan Baxter, Mary May or Maggie Roberts. Only in later years did the popular performers The Orlons (1966), The Lettermen (1968) and Sandie Shaw (1982) take the title as singles.
