action
The former Secret Service agent , Frank Farmer, is a security expert who is always employed when the lives of his clients are particularly threatened. So he recognizes an assassin in a parking garage in time, shoots him and saves his protégé's life. Frank is hired for $ 3,000 a week to protect pop singer Rachel Marron, who receives threatening letters. He quickly realizes that security issues around Rachel are being handled very carelessly. Gradually he changes this situation, whereby he has to fight, among other things, against the resistance of his client. Only when Rachel learns that a fan has broken into her house - her advisors had kept this a secret from her for a long time - she reacts shocked and realizes the sense of the tightened security measures.
Rachel and Frank get closer, fall in love and spend a night together. Frank regrets this the next morning: He thinks it is a mistake to get involved in a relationship with his customer, because he is paid as a bodyguard and wants to devote himself exclusively to this activity. Rachel is seriously offended and tries to return the favor in the form of sharp remarks and a demonstrative flirtation with Frank's ex-colleague Portman.
Some time later, the threat from the stranger becomes so serious that Rachel's concerts are canceled. Rachel, her son Fletcher, her sister Nicki and Frank hide in the wilderness in his father's house. When Fletcher is almost killed in an attack there, it turns out that the threat does not come from a crazy fan, but from a professional killer whom the jealous Nicki has hired anonymously. The killer breaks into the house at night and unwittingly kills his own client. After this experience, Rachel and Frank get closer again.
Shortly after Nicki's funeral, the Academy Awards, for which Rachel is nominated, takes place. Frank immediately realizes that his former colleague Portman is the assassin and has hidden a gun in a camera. He catches the bullet in his own body and shoots the murderer. Some time later, Rachel has another bodyguard that Frank recommended to her. At an airport there is an endeavoring friendly goodbye between the two, which Rachel ends with “So let's get it over with” before she disappears into her private jet. Suddenly she brings the machine to a standstill and walks towards Frank, whereupon the two kiss passionately. The last scene shows a conference: a member of parliament is welcomed, Frank watches the room in the background.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 25, 1992 that the film was not a love story, but rather a study of the differences in lifestyles between two people: the pop star Rachel Marron and the more normally working Frank Farmer. Ebert wrote that the characters designed by Lawrence Kasdan had a pinch of the cynicism known from the other Kasdan films.
The lexicon of international films found: “Clichéd criminal history as a vehicle for the ambitious confrontation of laconic western ideology with modern star cult. The weak script gains in profile through the close staging and in audience appeal through the attractive cast. "
