reception

Charts

ELE reached number 12 on the US charts. It was on the Billboard 200 for 32 weeks . In Germany the album reached number 48 and stayed in the charts for two weeks. ELE was also able to place itself in the Netherlands with position 56 in the album charts.

criticism

The album received a "B" rating in a review by Entertainment Weekly . Rhymes perform his rhymes with an insane passion and portray a charming, cartoon-like character (" mountains of rhymes with a maniacal fervor (and a charming, cartoonish persona) "). The production of the album is criticized negatively, because the beats and sound effects do not do justice to the rapper's “energy level” (“ The beats and sound effects don't always live up to Rhymes' energy level ”).

All Music Guide rated ELE positively. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, the site's editor, noted that Busta Rhymes had risen to superstar in a shockingly short amount of time. He attributed this to the fact that there is no comparable rapper to Rhymes. Busta Rhymes is characterized by his sense of humor, a fancy dress style and the courage to take risks, which heresembles Jurassic 5 and Wu-Tang Clan , who had pushed the boundaries of hip-hop (“ Nobody else in his position had his wild sense of humor, reckless fashion sense, and, most importantly, willingness to take risks. Yes, underground rappers like the Jurassic Five and the entire Wu clan relentlessly pushed the boundaries of hip-hop, but they operated at the fringes of pop culture. "). In contrast to these, however, Rhymes does not stand on the edge of pop culture, but rather positions himself in the middle of society (“ Busta placed himself smack in the middle of middle America ”). ELE is praised for its hard beats, intelligent lyrics, good collaborations and crazy samples (" it has hard beats, weird samples, unpredictable musical juxtapositions and collaborations, and sharp, intelligent rhymes. ").

The Grammy Awards 2000 was ELE (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front in the category Best Rap Album nominated, but lost The Slim Shady LP by Eminem .
