How I Got Over is the ninth studio album by the US hip-hop band The Roots , which was released on June 22, 2010 via Def Jam Recordings . The production was mainly done by the band members Black Thought , Questlove , Dice Raw and Rick Friedrich. The sound of the album can be described as very calm and represents a mixture of hip-hop with soul , jazz , indie and gospel . The lyrical theme includes existentialist thoughts, themes of modern society and midlife crises .

The album went straight to number 6 on the US Billboard 200 chart , with 51,000 copies sold in the first week . How I Got Over received mostly very positive reviews from music critics because of its eclectic style and deep lyrics. It was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2011 Grammy Awards , but was recovered from Eminem .

background

In 2008, The Roots announced that Rising Down would be their final studio album. This statement was revoked some time later by Questlove by announcing a new album called How I Got Over on Twitter , which should be released in the summer of 2009. The album was recorded during her employment as a band on the show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon . The release was pushed back again and again, so the album was only released on June 22, 2010, over a year after the originally planned release.

music

Of the songs initially intended for the album, only The Day , Walk Alone and the theme song How I Got Over made it to the final version. Similar to the previous album Rising Down , How I Got Over features a large number of guest singers and rappers, for example John Legend can be heard on the single The Fire and the alternative rock group Monster of Folk on the remake of their song Dear God .

The overall sound of the album is very calm, which is characterized by mostly low BPM numbers. The refrains are sung almost without exception, which is why David Hilzendegen from laut.de regards the album as "a declaration of love to singer / songwriters and indie pop". Questlove's "unmistakable drumming" is characteristic, and electronic aids are almost completely dispensed with, so "rich, clear and live sounds [...] form the framework of the album".

reception

Commercial win

The album went straight to number 6 on the US Billboard 200 chart , with 51,000 copies sold in its first week, making it the fifth top ten position for Roots on this list. Furthermore, the album was able to book third places in the Billboard R&B / Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums Charts and fourth place in the Digital Albums Charts. In Canada it reached number 14 in the Top 100 Albums Charts, number 3 in Switzerland , number 33 in Holland , number 35 in New Zealand and number 117 in the Top Albums 150 charts in France . In Germany the album reached the 70th place in the charts .

criticism

Overall, the album was received very positively by the trade press, with the Metacritic website calculating an average rating of 86% from 23 reviews. Björn Bischoff from Plattentests.de praises the successful integration of the guest artists, so "the guests of the album [...] have all the time in the world in every song", and "an organic sound spreads like it did around the turn of the millennium made pretty much every head nod ", praising the album's tendency to go back to the" roots of the band ". He gives the album 8 out of 10 points.
After, according to David Hilzendegen from laut.de, with the predecessor Rising Down "the mass of guests contributed to disguising all characteristics", in How I Got Over "the features are in [...] contrast to the predecessor a record with a clear structure integrated, so that the successor does not have a subliminal compilation smell despite the many guests ". It awards 5 out of 5 possible points.
With this album, The Roots "arrived at the tidiest, most serene album of their career", says Daniel Gerhardt from Visions.de , so "How I Got Over [...] knows no excitement", but also shows itself in "some angry stanzas by auditor Black Thought [...] the old roots bite ". With the realization "how exciting hip-hop can be when you are at peace with yourself", he gives 9 out of 12 points.
