2001 is the second solo album by the American rapper Dr. Dre . It was released on November 15, 1999 via Aftermath Entertainment , a sub-label of Interscope Records . Similar to its predecessor The Chronic , the album was quickly referred to as a classic. 2001 appeared in four versions: as uncensored and censored CD, as a record and as an instrumental version.
designation
Originally the album should be called 2000 with reference to the upcoming millennium change . Dr. Dre wanted to suggest how modern and far ahead of its time his music was. However, Suge Knight secured the title for a compilation by Dr. Dre on his Death Row Records label , where Dr. Dre was previously under contract.
Music genre
Musically, the album by Dr. Dr's production style, which is characterized by plenty of electronic synthesizer sounds and is a consistent further development of the G-Funk he developed . However, the album also contains songs in which the percussion can be heard a bit more clearly and heavily and the electronics are not as dominant.
production
All songs on the album were written by Dr. Dre produced in collaboration with Mel-Man . Only the beat of The Message produced by Lord Finesse is an exception. Samples from different songs by other artists were used for the beats.
Cover design
The album cover is black. At the top left of the picture, Dr. Dre , at the bottom right you can see a leaf of the hemp plant and the title 2001 , also in green.

Blige and Rell. No song on the album is a solo track, instead Dr. Dre himself couldn't be heard on the songs Xxplosive , Murder Ink , Some LA Niggaz and Ackrite .

2001 rose to number 33 in the German album charts in the 48th calendar week of 1999 and occupied positions 45 in the following weeks; 44 and 41. In the 7th calendar week 2000 it reached the highest position 20. Overall, the album stayed in the German Top 100 for 49 weeks with interruptions. In the USA in 2001, it entered the charts at number 2 and was in the top for 164 weeks 200 represented. In the German annual charts for 2000, the sound carrier was ranked 45th.
The songs Still DRE (US # 93, 5 weeks), Forgot About Dre (DE # 41, 9 weeks), The Next Episode (DE # 34, 16 weeks) and The Watcher were selected as single releases .
Sales figures and awards
2001 , with over 9.3 million copies sold worldwide, is Dr. Dre . In the USA alone it was sold over six million times and was therefore awarded six times platinum . In Germany, it received a gold record for more than 150,000 copies sold .

At the Grammy Awards in 2001 , the album was in the category Best Rap Album nominated, but lost The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem . In contrast, the song Forgot About Dre received an award in the category Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group .

The online magazine laut.de rated it three out of a possible five points when it was published in 2001 . In 2015 it received five out of five possible points in the milestones section : Reviewer Stefan Johannesberg writes that the album “laid the foundation for the G-Funk sound of the noughties and set standards for beats and production.” Dr. Dre broke the chains of gangsta rap with the classic "finally." The single Still DRE in particular is "timeless" and has one of the "best beats of all time."
