Capital Punishment received generally positive reviews.

The website laut.de recognized the album as a milestone in 2014 and rated it with five out of a possible five points:

"Pun really gets everything out of itself on" Capital Punishment ". With Wyclef he founds the reggae-infected "Caribbean Connection", unpacked the godfather for "Glamor Life" and the socially critical one on the title track. Even the rap stars around Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang mentioned at the beginning are only guests on his ride into the history books. [...] New York had its new king and the Latin American community its hero. From the abused child to the racket and drug dealer to the superstar beloved everywhere - the story of Christopher Lee Rios really deserved more years or even a happy ending. "
