Dead Prez , stylized as dead prez , is an American hip-hop - duo from Florida , consisting stic.man from the rappers and M -1. They are considered representative of the hardcore hip hop and very politically inspired by Public Enemy and Malcolm X . One example is the song We Want Freedom from the album Let's get free .

Career

stic.man (* 1974 as Clayton Gavin) and M-1 (* 1977 as Lavonne Alford) met on the campus of Florida A&M University , where they both studied economics . Since they both shared the same views on society, they soon began making music together. In order to make their music known to a wider mass, they then moved to New York City , where they called themselves Dead Prez, derived from the slang expression "dead presidents" for "banknotes". First they released a few mixtapes and collaborated with various artists, including Big Punisher , on his debut album Capital Punishment , before they finally met Lord Jamar from Brand Nubian , who helped them to a contract with Loud Records . Her first album Let's Get Free was released there in 2000 . In 2002 and 2003 they again devoted themselves to mixtapes, Turn Off The Radio Vol. 1 and 2 , on which they rapped over the melodies of songs by other artists, such as Aaliyah . In 2004 their second album followed, RBG - Revolutionary But Gangsta , this time distributed by Columbia Records . In 2006 they worked with the Outlawz on the album Can't Sell Dope Forever .
