Teena Marie (2010)

Teena Marie (born March 5, 1956 in Santa Monica , California - † December 26, 2010 in Pasadena , California; born Mary Christine Brockert ) was an American R&B and soul singer, guitarist, composer and producer. Her best-known recordings include Square Biz (1981), Lovergirl (1984) and Ooo La La La (1988). She was also known by the pseudonyms Lady T and Lady Tee .

Life

Teena Marie had Portuguese ancestry and grew up in Oakwood, California , in the midst of a predominantly African American population. She lived temporarily in the house of the family of the US singer Jill Jones . When Teena Marie was sleeping in a hotel room in 2004, a large picture frame fell on her head and the blow caused a severe concussion that resulted in temporary seizures for the rest of her life. She had had a severe seizure a month before she died. On December 26, 2010, Teena Marie was found lifeless by her daughter in her Los Angeles home.

Career

Musician Rick James wrote and produced her first album, Wild and Peaceful (1979). The track I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love , a duet between the two, became a hit. Since there was no photo of Teena Marie on the cover and her label Motown rarely signed white artists, she was initially mistaken for a black singer.

In 1980, Teena Marie appeared as the opening act for the US musician Prince on his then Dirty Mind tour. After her fourth album (1981), she left the Motown label in a dispute. There were legal disputes, the outcome of which became known as the "Brockert Initiative": A label may not keep an artist under contract if there are no publications. Several successful albums and singles on Epic Records followed . For the movie Top Gun she contributed the song Lead me on . When commercial success waned in the late 1980s, Teena Marie withdrew from the music business and devoted herself to her family. She had a daughter named Alia Rose, who also appears as a singer.

Some of their hits were processed by hip-hop musicians in the form of samples in the 1990s , e.g. Ooo La La La by the Fugees in their hit Fu-Gee-La (1996), or newly recorded by other singers, e.g. B. I Need Your Lovin by Sheena Easton (2000). In 2004 Teena Marie made a comeback with the album La Dona , which reached number 6 in the charts. This comeback attempt earned her a Grammy nomination that same year. In 2008 she received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation .
