Heather Headley (born October 5, 1974 in Barataria , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a Trinidadian singer and actress , producer and songwriter .

Life

Childhood and youth

Heather Headley was able to play the piano at the age of four . The daughter of a pastor came into contact with several musical genres during her childhood and began to be interested in calypso, reggae and soca. At the age of fifteen, she and her family moved to the United States , to Fort Wayne, Indiana , as her father faced new career opportunities there. After graduating from high school, Heather Headley enrolled at Northwestern University specializing in communications and musical theater. However, towards the end of her studies she decided against an academic career and joined a theater group.

Already during her studies she appeared on the theater stage: She took on a role in the plays Dreamgirls and The World Goes Round at the Marroitt Lincolnshire Theater.

Career

In 1997 she got her first role in the theater. The Disney company gave her the role of Nala in the musical The Lion King . This enabled her to draw public attention to herself. Shortly afterwards she was signed by RCA Records and now devoted herself to the musical industry.

A year later she sang the song Love Will Find a Way with Kenny Lattimore for the musical The Lion King II , which was also broadcast in the advertising for this musical.

In October 2002 her debut album was released with the title This Is Who I Am . Despite receiving praise for her first single, He Is , it failed to make it to the top of the charts. Only in the dance charts she reached number 4. With her second single I Wish I Wasn't she was more successful and even managed to achieve a nomination at the Grammy Awards . Her album eventually sold half a million copies and was awarded gold .

In 2004 she made a cameo in the sequel to Dirty Dancing as a singer.

Her second album was released after some delay in 2006 under the title In My Mind . This album reached number one on the R&B charts. The title track became a dance hit and a number one hit on the US dance charts as a remix. In the same year she appeared at the concert Under the Desert Sky by Andrea Bocelli and sang with him, among other things, the world hit The Prayer .

In 2007 she appeared again with Bocelli, this time in Italy at the Teatro del Silenzio near Lajatico and sang with him again The Prayer and Vivo per lei , this time an English-Italian version was sung.

In 2009 their current album Audience of One was released , in which Headley started a new musical direction: Gospel .
