Afterhours is an Italian rock band around frontman Manuel Agnelli, which was founded in Milan in 1985 .
Band history
Founded in the mid-80s by singer, guitarist and keyboardist Manuel Agnelli, the band released the first mini album All the Good Children Go to Hell in 1988 . In addition to Agnelli, the band consisted of guitarist Paolo Cantù and drummer Alessandro Pelizzari (who had replaced founding member Roberto Girardi). The first studio album During Christine's Sleep followed in 1990 on the Vox Pop label ; Girardi could be heard on drums again, while Paolo Mauri joined in as bassist. After the American music magazine Alternative Press became aware of the group, Afterhours was able to represent Italy at the New Music Seminar in New York . Another mini album, Cocaine Head , was released in 1991 , and the band also performed at the Berlin Indipendence Days festival and received further international interest. The next album in 1993 was Pop Kills Your Soul , with (apart from Agnelli) a completely new line-up: Xabier Iriondo on guitar, Alessandro Zerilli on bass and Giorgio Prette on drums.
Eventually the band switched from English to Italian lyrics, which was reflected in the 1995 album Germi , on which violinist Davide Rossi could be heard for the first time. The single Dentro Marilyn was re-recorded by Mina as Tre volte dentro me . In 1997 the band signed a new record deal with Mescal and released the next album Hai paura del buio? . This was followed in 1999 by Non è per semper , on which Dario Ciffo made his debut as the new violinist, Giorgio Ciccarelli as the second guitarist and keyboardist and Andrea Viti as the new bassist. After an extensive tour, the group's first live album, Siam tre piccoli porcellin , was released in 2001 . In the same year, frontman Manuel Agnelli organized the alternative music festival Tora for the first time ! Torah! Without guitarist Xabier Iriondo, who left the band, Afterhours returned to the studio in 2002 and released the album Quello che non c'è , which reached number four in the Italian charts.
After a tour, the band began a collaboration with the Twilight Singers by Greg Dulli (ex- Afghan-Wings ): They went on a tour of Italy together, Agnelli accompanied the Twilight Singers as keyboard player in Europe and America and Dulli co-produced the next Afterhours- Album Ballate per piccole iene , which was released in 2005 and once again surpassed the success of its predecessor. The international version of the album, with lyrics in English, was released under the title Ballads for Little Hyenas . Accordingly, the following tour of the band extended to other European countries and the USA. In 2006 Roberto Dell'Era joined the band as the new bassist and Enrico Gabrielli as keyboardist and saxophonist.
Afterhours debuted with the major label Universal in 2008 with the album I milanesi ammazzano il sabato . Soon after the album was released, Rodrigo D'Erasmo replaced Ciffo on the violin. In 2009 the band took part in the Sanremo Festival for the first time with Il paese è reale and was awarded the Critics' Prize, but did not reach the final. With 18 other representatives of the Italian alternative and indie scene, the group then started a project that resulted in the compilation Afterhours presentano: Il paese è reale (19 artisti per un paese migliore?) . In the same year Afterhours worked again with Mina in the song Adesso è facile (from the album Facile ). Gabrielli left the band.
The band did not release a new studio album until 2012, after Xabier Iriondo returned and they turned their backs on Universal. Padania was released on the band's own label Germi and was able to build on the success of its predecessors. In 2014 Universal released a new edition of the 1997 album Hai paura del buio? , which had been voted the best independent album of the past 20 years by journalists. The band then worked with a number of other musicians, such as The Afghan Whigs , Mark Lanegan , Edoardo Bennato , Negramaro , Joan as Police Woman , Piero Pelù , Samuel and John Parish . After the accompanying tour, Giorgio Prette and Giorgio Ciccarelli left the band.
With the newcomers Fabio Rondanini (drums) and Stefano Pilia (guitar), Afterhours recorded the next studio album Folfiri o Folfox , which was released in 2016 and reached the top of the charts for the first time. At the same time it was announced that Manuel Agnelli would appear as a juror in the casting show X Factor from the tenth season . In 2017 the band celebrated their 30-year career with the tour # Afterhours30 , followed by the compilation Foto di pura gioia - Antologia 1987-2017 .
