The Sankt Stephan Viaduct ( Hungarian Szent István völgyhíd ; in local parlance often just called a viaduct ) is a road bridge in the Hungarian city of Veszprém . In the hilly city, it connects the Jerusalem ( Jeruzsálemhegy ) and the cemetery hill ( Temetőhegy ), or the streets Dósza György utca with Pápai utca . In the past, Pápai utca was the beginning of Hauptstrasse 8 to Graz . It is named after Stephan I , the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary .

description

The 185 m long structure consists of two large reinforced concrete - arched bridges that are separated by the top of a hill. The viewing platform on this hill offers a wide view over the city to the mountains of the Bakony forest . The eastern, 95 m long bridge crosses the Séd brook and the Kittenberger Kálmán utca at a height of 37 m with a large, 46 m wide arch. The somewhat smaller western bridge, 75 m long, stands a little higher in a side valley, where it crosses Veszprémvölgyi utca with two 27 m wide arches, which leads down into the Veszprém valley.

The arches each consist of two slender arched ribs that are connected and stiffened by flat crossbars. The roadway is elevated on narrow supports, which are also connected by cross beams. Architectural details such as the various inclined connections in the supporting structure and the small consoles on the multi-stepped sides of the deck girder indicate that at the time the bridge was built, the labor costs of a complicated formwork were comparatively less important than the material costs.

The bridge was designed by Róbert Folly and built in 1936 and 1937.
