Bakony Forest

The Bakony Forest or the Bakony Mountains [ ˈbɒkoɲ- ] (German also "beech forest") is a hilly landscape in central Hungary in the Veszprém county north of Lake Balaton , which was created about 3.8 million years ago through volcanic activity. The Badacsony wine-growing region is located in the Bakony Forest . The region, which is part of the Hungarian Central Uplands , was mainly inhabited by Danube Swabians until 1945 . Some towns in the Bakony Forest are Veszprém (Wesprim, Weißbrunn) , Ajka (Eikau) , Várpalota , Zirc and Mór (Moor) .

The mountains consist mainly of limestone and dolomite . There are also bauxite , manganese and lignite . The highest point is the Kőris at 704 m. In some places there are still old yew trees .
