Erbach is a small town in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg (Germany).

Geographical location

Erbach is located on the southeast edge of the Hochstrasse (part of the Swabian Alb ) between Ulm in the northeast and Ehingen in the west-southwest. It is located near the left or north bank of the Danube , from which it is separated by many small still waters . The Dellmensingen district south of the Danube is located at the confluence of the Schmiehe and the Rot , which comes from the south, and which flows north of the village into the Danube, which comes from the south-west. The Erlenbach , coming from the Bach district, flows right through Erbach and flows into the canalized part of the Danube near the sewage treatment plant.

history

Beginning of settlement and foundation of the place

Settlement remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Age attest to an early settlement of the area around Erbach. At the time of the Celts , the location on the edge of the Danube valley was populated. This is evidenced by a so-called Viereckschanze and a bronze sword covered with verdigris that was found during gravel dredging in 1972, which was probably around 600 BC. Was forged. Burial mounds prove that the landlords of the time afforded fine jewelry made of gold, silver and precious stones from the Mediterranean region. The Romans only penetrated the wooded and undeveloped area relatively late. In 1887 the remains of a Roman building were excavated from the lower heap. The objects found there were packed in boxes and shipped to Ludwigsburg during the Second World War. The ture zu Elerbach , mentioned in a document in 1384, denoted the former Roman tower on the Schlossberg.

middle Ages

Already at the time of the Merovingians , the later Erbach was the seat of an original parish . In the founding document of the St. Georgen monastery from 1083, a Fridericus de Helribach is listed as a witness, who probably came from today's Erbach. The parish of Irlebach was first mentioned in 1275 in the Liber decimationis of the Diocese of Constance .

At the time of Charlemagne, there was an original parish consecrated to the Gallic Saint Martin of Tours in Erbach. This looked after the surrounding area with 14 chaplains. As elsewhere, secular and ecclesiastical power united on the castle hill.

During the High Middle Ages, Erbach was part of the Duchy of Swabia and was a fiefdom of the Counts of Berg-Schelklingen. In 1345 Erbach fell to the Habsburg territories in Upper Austria . The Habsburgs gave the rulership on site to changing noble families as fiefs, including for example the Lords of Ellerbach, the Lochen and Stadion, 1348 the Stein, 1400 the Schenk, and in the further course of the 15th century the Villenbach and Westernach. In 1388 Duke George the Rich bought the local rule, which Emperor Maximilian took back as a settled fief after the Landshut War of Succession and the local rule pledged several times.

Early modern age

In 1535 Hans von Baumgarten received the local rule as a fiefdom, who built Erbach Castle from 1550 to 1552 . In 1622 the fiefdom with Hans Ludwig von Ulm came to the imperial barons of Ulm-Erbach. In order to revive agriculture, the local rulers tried to attract young and strong men from Vorarlberg for the many widows after the plague and war. In the 18th century Erbach was part of the Upper Austrian margravate of Burgau .

Württemberg time

With the Peace of Pressburg , Erbach came through mediatization initially to the Kingdom of Bavaria and with the border treaty between Bavaria and Württemberg in 1810 to the Kingdom of Württemberg , which subordinated the place to the Oberamt Ehingen . In 1850, with the opening of the southern line from Ulm to Friedrichshafen, it was connected to the rail network of the Württemberg State Railways . In 1938 Erbach came to the district of Ehingen through the regional reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg . In 1945 the place became part of the French occupation zone and was thus assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which became part of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Incorporation and district reform

As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , the municipality of Ringingen was incorporated on January 1, 1972, and the municipalities of Bach , Dellmensingen , Donaurieden and Ersingen on July 1, 1974 . During the district reform carried out in 1973 , Erbach was incorporated into the Alb-Donau district .

The mayor is elected for an eight-year term. Paul Roth's term of office ended on November 26, 2010. His successor is Achim Gaus (non-party), who was elected in the second ballot on October 24, 2010 and took office on January 1, 2011. In the mayoral election on October 7, 2018, he was confirmed in office with 63.0 percent of the valid votes and a voter turnout of 45.9%. His competitor Wolfgang Schrade (non-party) received 36.6 percent.

Erbach is located on the B 311 between Ulm and Ehingen (Danube) and on the Württemberg Southern Railway between Ulm and Friedrichshafen . Regional Express trains to Friedrichshafen and Ulm run every hour . In the evening, Interregio-Express trains on the Stuttgart-Ulm-Lindau route also stop in Erbach. The city belongs to the Donau-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund , in whose tariff area the Südbahn between Ulm and Bad Schussenried also falls. Erbach also has a sports airfield .

Buildings

The town's landmark, visible from afar, is the Erbach Renaissance castle from the early 16th century, surrounded by a wall and moat. The castle is owned by the imperial barons of Ulm zu Erbach. It also contains local history, which can be viewed on request
