Gilbert Montagné (born December 28, 1951 in Paris ) is a French singer.

The musical teaching

Gilbert Montagné, born in Paris on December 28, 1951 , who is blind due to retinopathy of premature infants , is the fourth child in a family from humble backgrounds. He discovered music very early on in a music school in Saint-Mandé , where he received a classical education. Nevertheless, he developed his own taste in music, which despite its diversity can be found in the field of jazz and rock . He spent the next six years at the National Institute for the Young Blind on Invalidenplatz. During this stay, Gilbert Montagné acquired an organ , an instrument that reinforced his desire to become a musician.

On a journey of discovery in America

In the summer of 1968, at the age of 16, Gilbert Montagné decided to play his music to some music producers. However, these accused him of sounding too American. In spite of everything, he recorded a record Quand on ferme les yeux , in English “When you close your eyes”, the lyrics of which were written by Pierre Delanoé . Hardly anyone noticed the record. So he decided to visit his sister, a French teacher in Miami . There he enrolled at the university and studied classical music. In his spare time he played jazz and soul music . Alone or with friends, he quickly formed a band that played in clubs in Miami or New York all winter .

His first success

In 1971 a phone call with Salvatore Adamo convinced him to come back to Europe. In May of the same year, Montagné was finally in London , together with the choir singers of Joe Cocker and Elvis Presley , to record the song The Fool , in German "Der Dummkopf". The song reached the top of the charts in twelve countries. This was followed by tours as well as television and radio appearances. At the invitation of Julien Clerc , Gilbert had his first appearances in the Olympiahalle, a concert hall in Paris, and also made a short film that depicts his life. At the time, Gilbert Montagné was just 20 years old. This was followed by his second album in 1973 and a third in 1976. He married Maureen Byrne, whom he divorced in 1993. His first son Eric was born in 1975 and now works in the hotel industry in Paris. Nicolas was born ten years later and now lives in Canada with his mother.

The return to Europe

Engaged by Johnny Hallyday after five years of “exile”, Gilbert Montagné took part as a piano player in a concert in the “ Pavillon de Paris ” in Pantin , a city north of Paris. Then he started his big comeback in public by recording the song Believe in me in 1980 . Three years later he got a platinum record for his album Liberté . Many of the songs on this album, including On va s'aimer , in German “We will love us”, and Sous les sunlights des tropiques , in German “Under the tropical sun”, wrote Didier Barbelivien .

The big success

During the 1980s he toured after another and released several albums in quick succession (Quelques notes de musique, Je veux tout, Plus fort la vie, Perdu dans New York, Le coeur en sursis) before finally deciding in 1990 to to move to Canada. His gold and platinum records through the very successful tours and the sale of the accompanying CDs as well as his live double CD made his successes ever greater. After living with Nikole for eight years, she eventually became his second wife. After a lovely honeymoon in Bali , Gilbert continued his constant fight for the blind, especially through Europe-wide projects to label products in Braille . After a thirty year career, he finally decided to retire from the music industry.
