Self Control is a 1984 pop song written by Raf , Giancarlo Bigazzi, and Steve Piccolo . Both in the version interpreted by Raf himself and in the version interpreted by Laura Branigan , the song became an international top 10 hit.

backgrounds

The songwriters Riefoli, Bigazzi and Piccolo wrote the song in 1983, it was released by Raffaele Riefoli under the stage name Raf on his 1984 debut album. However, this only appeared in Europe because Raf, as an unknown artist, did not get a worldwide record deal. The songwriters had previously offered the song to Laura Branigan through their music publisher , who had already achieved chart success with Gloria in the USA. For this reason, an Italo disco version appeared on Raf's album Change Your Mind in 1984 and a pop version produced by Jack White on Branigan's album Self Control . Finally, Laura Branigan released the song as a single in the summer of 1984 , only a short time later the version by Raf appeared. This was initially exposed to violent allegations of plagiarism, which could be quickly dispelled based on the copyright notices in Laura Branigan's publications.

The Laura Branigan version was released on the albums Self Control (1984), The Best of Laura Branigan (1993), The Essential: Laura Branigan (2002) and The Platinum Collection (2006). In 1992 a "Germany Remix" was released and in 1999 a "South Africa Remix". The producers of these versions were Jack White and Robbie Buchanan.

Chart success

The version by Raf was very popular in Italy , where it stayed at number 1 for seven weeks. In Germany, it was at number 2 behind the version by Laura Branigan. The B-side of the single by Raf contains Part 2 of Self Control , which contains a rap passage by Raf and an unnamed second artist. Both sides together correspond to the six-minute maxi version . The B-side of the maxi single is Running Away . Laura Branigan's first released single became a top ten hit in Europe and the US. In Germany , the version stayed at number 1 for six weeks, and it also reached first place in the charts in Switzerland, Austria, Canada, South Africa and Sweden. In Germany, the Branigan version of Self Control was the most commercially successful song of 1984. The B-side of the single is Silent Partners .
