The building of the First National Bank of Brewster , later South East Town Hall is in the Queen Anne style built brick building on Main Street ( US Highway 6 ) beside the train station in Brewster , New York . It was built in 1886 and is currently used as the office building of the Town of Southeast , which Brewster is a part of.

building

The rectangular one-story brick building stands on a granite base . The hipped roof is covered with slate and has a decorative ridge cover. The main window front consists of a central mullion and double arched windows. The architectural style also takes into account the style element of the rounded windows of the Richardsonian Romanesque, which was also popular at the time .

A small wing on the north facade is clad with hexagonal clapboards and has a Palladian window on its gable side; a chimney sits on its roof. On the opposite side in the south there is a similar part of the building with a roof tower, which is provided with an opaion . The slope of the plot of land on which the building stands allows a basement entrance at ground level on this side. A small extension on the west side has been adapted to the original structure. The walls are made of unpainted paneling and the ceilings are made of tongue and groove wooden slats that are also not painted. The former counter area has a vaulted ceiling and six-armed chandelier made of brass .

history

The First National Bank was founded in 1875 after Brewster and the surrounding area experienced significant growth after the American Civil War . The bank developed successfully enough to be able to afford its own building in 1886. The bank was built next to the railway station.

The building was not significantly changed during its use by the bank, apart from the addition on the western side in the 1950s. When the bank closed in 1964. The city of Southeast, to which Brewster belongs, quickly decided to move from the old administration building a little further down the street to this building. The town supervisor and the town clerk were based here on New York State Route 22 north of the village until today's City Hall was built . The building department and several other departments are still located here.
