The Westphalian mare Bella Rose (* 2004 ) is an international dressage horse and one of Isabell Werth's top horses . She is considered one of the best dressage horses in the world.

Athletic career

Early years

Born in the breeding community of Heinrich and Wilhelm Strunck, the chestnut mare moved to Isabell Werth's stable at the age of three. The mare was discovered by Werth's former rider Matthias Bouten. Bella Rose showed a talent for higher lessons from an early age. In 2011, at the age of 7, she completed her first advanced level dressage tests.

Entry into Grand Prix sport

The mare completed her first international Grand Prix in May 2013, when she was 9 years old, in Munich. There she was able to win the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special with over 75% each. In the same year she was still victorious in Perl-Borg and Frankfurt.

At the international dressage tournament in Perl-Borg in June 2014, Bella Rose scored over 80% in the Grand Prix and Special for the first time and was second behind Matthias Alexander Rath with Totilas . At the CHIO Aachen in July she again achieved excellent results and was nominated for the World Championships with Isabell Werth. Thanks to her appearances, the mare is now moving more into the international focus and was one of the favorites for the World Championship in August.

Together with Fabienne Lütkemeier on D'Agostino , Kristina Sprehe on Desperados FRH and Helen Langehanenberg on Damon Hill , Isabell Werth and Bella Rose formed the dressage team for the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Caen. As the third team rider, she started on the second day of competition and achieved over 81% in the Grand Prix. They took over the lead, which they only had to hand over to Charlotte Dujardin with Valegro in the end. For the first time, they left the previous German top couple Helen Langehanenberg with Damon Hill NRW behind. The German dressage team secured the team gold medal with a lead of over 10 percentage points. On the same day, Bella Rose developed a dermis inflammation, which is why she was canceled for the remaining competitions. In November she made her comeback at the Stuttgart German Masters and won both the Grand Prix and the Special. Then the mare took a break for health reasons, this time for several years.

Comeback after injury break

In June 2018 the mare made her comeback at the dressage tournament at the Schindlhof in Fritzens . There she was able to win the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special with 77% and 80% respectively. She was then nominated to take part in the CHIO Aachen, where she again won both exams by a considerable margin. From then on she was again a candidate for the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon. In August she again won the Grand Prix at the tournament in Cappeln and with 87% also won the freestyle, only the second freestyle of her life. Isabell Werth confirmed after the tournament that the mare is her first choice for Tryon.

In the nomination, Bella Rose was given preference over Werth's other horses, the three-time European Champion Weihegold OLD and Emilio , who were at first and second place in the world rankings at that time. In the Grand Prix, the team competition, Isabell Werth and Bella Rose were the last German couple to start. With an outstanding performance and a rating of almost 85%, they made a significant contribution to the team gold medal. In the Grand Prix Special they secured the individual gold medal with over 86% in front of the American Laura Graves . Due to the impending storm , the Grand Prix Freestyle was canceled. In November the mare started at the German Masters in Stuttgart and won both the Grand Prix and the World Cup Freestyle.

In 2019, the couple was nominated for the European Championships in Rotterdam , where they were able to secure all three titles, in the team classification as well as in the Grand Prix Spécial and the Grand Prix Freestyle, thanks to new best performances. Werth thus repeated her success at the 2017 European Championships , at which she also won triple gold with the Don Schufro daughter Weihegold OLD .

Since the Westphalian mare's comeback in 2018, the couple has remained unbeaten in every test. In January 2020 Bella Rose was ranked number 1 in the world.
