Thiaroye Gare is one of the 16 districts (Communes d'arrondissement du Sénégal) of Pikine , the largest city in Senegal even before the capital Dakar .

geography

Thiaroye Gare is located in the center of the bottleneck of the Cap-Vert peninsula north of the Thiaroye sur Mer district .

The approximately diamond-shaped delimited city district, the boundary length of which is around 1300 meters on all four sides, has an area of ​​1.7 km².

The center and the south of the city district is occupied by the square-bound and only loosely built-up area of Camp de Thiaroye . The residents of Thiaroye Gare live in the densely populated urban development on the north and east edges of the camp. The Route des Niayes forms the border with the neighboring district of Guinaw Rail Nord to the west and the Route de Malika in the north separates Thiaroye Gare from Djidah Thiaroye Kao . In the south, beyond Autoroute 1, lies the Tivaouane Diacksao district .

history

The district of Thiaroye Gare owes its name to the Gare de Thiaroye . This station on the Dakar – Niger railway line , which passes just under two and a half kilometers north of the historic fishing village of Thiaroye sur Mer , initially served the strategic military needs of Camp de Thiaroye, which adjoins the railway station to the south, and then as the starting point for the development of a civilian settlement on the north and on the East edge of the camp.

The camp, and for the name Thiaroye, became a tragic fame by Thiaroye Massacre , where a controversial figure from the on December 1, 1944 demobilization forthcoming Senegalese Tirailleurs , in German-speaking countries as Senegal shooters have fallen known to the victim. On the morning of that day, on the orders of the commanding general , they had lined up on the esplanade and stood there in front of a threatening backdrop of machine guns and armored vehicles. As of 2013, the city district was part of the Restructuration de Pikine Irrégulier Sud (PIS) , a 700 hectare district redevelopment that affects 220,000 residents as part of the motorway project L'autoroute à péage Dakar – Diamniadio for the construction of Autoroute 1 .

Junction 7 of Autoroute 1 in the extreme south of Thiaroye Gare connects the city district to the west with the capital Dakar and to the east, after passing a toll station on the main carriageway, with the new Dakar-Blaise Diagne airport .

Infrastructure

After an urban planning conversion of the former military base Camp de Thiaroye can be found there by name
