The Viehmarktplatz , also popularly known as the Viehmarkt for short , is a square on the edge of Trier city ​​center . The square is best known for the cattle market baths that were discovered during the renovation in the 1990s .

The square is located in the historic old town of Trier. Jüdemerstraße runs directly across the square, Neustraße touches to the east and Stresemannstraße to the west.

history

The cattle market square was the central square of the Roman Trier aka Augusta Treverorum . The Roman street pattern of the Cardo and the Decumanus was highlighted in color on the square. There is also a plaque on the square, which commemorates the founding of Trier in 17 BC. . Chr recalls.

The square was formerly the garden of the Capuchin monastery, which had existed here since 1617 , but was closed in 1802. After the time of the French , the square was finally a cattle market in Prussian times. After the Second World War the square was used as a parking lot. When an underground car park was to be built, excavations began in 1986 , during which the cattle market baths were finally discovered. Today the square is used for markets and events.

The Thermenmuseum, which was built to maintain the cattle market baths, is located on the cattle market. The Jewish cemetery of Trier used to be located at the cattle market . The place called Augustinerhof , where the town hall, the Einigkeitsbrunnen and a bunker are located, is also in the immediate vicinity .

There is a branch of Sparkasse Trier at the Viehmarktplatz . There are other small shops and restaurants around the Viehmarktplatz. There is an underground car park under the square.
