The Mannheim Altrhein ferry is the oldest still functioning ferry in Germany and connects the Sandhofen district with the Friesenheimer Insel across the Mannheim Altrhein . It was built in Neckarsulm in 1897 and is on duty every day except Monday between the end of March and the end of September. It was completely overhauled in 2008. The ferry is now diesel-electric powered and pulled on a basic chain. Their capacity is 45 people or 10 tons of payload. The maximum permitted individual weight is 4.2 tons.

In the agricultural north of Mannheim , the ferry connection is mainly used by farmers and cyclists as part of the Rhine Valley Cycle Route . But it also transports motorcycles and cars.
