The house of the university at Düsseldorf Schadowplatz 14 (formerly 12) is an institution of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf . It opened on September 20, 2013. During the opening hours from Monday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., public events, conferences, exhibitions and student advisory services take place there. There is also an offer from the University and State Library of Düsseldorf for researching scientific literature. With the new house and its facility in the Stadtmitte district , the university, whose campus is more peripheral in the Bilk district , will have the opportunity to offer its information in a more central location and thus more accessible to the public.

The foundation is housed in a listed palace . It was built in 1896/1897 according to plans by the architects Kayser , von Großheim and Wöhler in the neo-renaissance style as a building for the Niederrheinische Bank . It was last used by the Dutch GarantiBank . In 2011 the Van Meeteren Foundation acquired it for five million euros and had the 1082 m² floor space, including a lecture hall with 172 seats and five meeting rooms with a total of 90 seats, redesigned for a further five million euros by the architect Volker Weuthen (HPP office).

The van Meeteren Foundation will leave the palace to the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf until December 31, 2042 for contractually agreed purposes. The operator of the house of the university is therefore the new foundation House of the University , which was provided with funds by honorary citizen Udo van Meeteren and his wife Irmel, by the Society of Friends and Supporters of Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf eV and by the state capital Düsseldorf . The usage concept was largely developed by Georg Pretzler, who, as the holder of the Van Meeteren endowed professorship “Studium universale”, will head the newly founded student academy and the house of the university.
