The University of Wales, Newport ( Engl. ) Or Prifysgol Cymru, Casnewydd ( Wal. ) Was a location of the University of Wales / Prifysgol Cymru . In April 2013 it was absorbed by the University of South Wales .
Newport has offered university education for more than 80 years. The institute's roots go back to the Mechanical Institute, which opened in 1841. The last existing institution was established in 1975 as Gwent College for higher education through the merger of various institutes. The college joined the University of Wales in 1996. The college was quickly referred to as the University of Wales College, Newport , and later officially renamed to that name.
The university most recently had six academic institutions: art , media and design; Business administration , computer science and engineering ; Education; Humanities and Science and Social Sciences .
The university had three campuses in the city, at Allt-yr-Yn 51 ° 35 ′ 24 "N, 3 ° 0 ′ 43" W , Caerleon 51 ° 37 ′ 1 "N, 2 ° 57 ′ 44" W , and the City Campus 51 ° 35 ′ 8 ″ N, 2 ° 59 ′ 22 ″ W on the banks of the Usk River near the city center.
