Beate Gütschow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beate Gütschow (born August 11, 1970 in Mainz ) is a contemporary German artist . She lives and works in Cologne and Berlin .

life and work

Beate Gütschow studied from 1993 to 2000 at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and in 1998 at the Oslo School of Art . She taught as a visiting professor from 2009 to 2010 at the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig . Since 2011 she has been a professor at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne .

In her work, Beate Gütschow examines the difference between photographic representation and reality. It also sheds light on the extent to which the viewer's perception is influenced by existing image knowledge.

LS series

In her first series, "LS" (short for Landscape), Gütschow reconstructed landscapes of the painting of the 17th and 18th centuries with the means of photography . On the computer, she assembles photos from many fragments that follow the design principles of the ideal landscape.

S series

The younger group of works, labeled “S” (abbreviation for city), consists of large-format black-and-white photos, which are also composed of many individual photos. Different architectures and countries are united in one picture. These works refer to documentary photography , but oppose it with photographic fiction .

I series

In the "I" series (abbreviation for interior space) Gütschow critically examines the image culture of advertising photography by arranging mundane objects - a car battery, a health chair, an overhead projector - in her studio into scenarios that seem surreal.

Z series

In this documentary series, Gütschow combines photographic fragments with computer-generated drawings. Z stands for cell prison, a former solitary confinement in Berlin-Moabit. Gütschow took photo fragments at this location and processed archive material into digital drawings.

HC series

In the “HC” series, Gütschow deals with the visual representation of gardens in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, HC stands for Hortus Conclusus.

Gütschow transfers found motifs from the contemporary architectural environment into the parallel perspective with the help of photogrammetry. She uses the historical quote as an intended break in perception in order to negotiate current developments in 3D photography at the same time.

honors and awards

Beate Gütschow was honored with the " ars viva price " of the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft (2006), the Otto-Dix-Preis / IBM Kunstpreis Neue Medien, Gera (2001) and the Kunstpreis der Stadt Nordhorn (2001). In 2001, Beate Gütschow was also a scholarship holder at Villa Aurora , Los Angeles.
