life and work

Matti Braun is the son of a Finnish mother and a German father. He grew up in Berlin . From 1989 to 1996 he studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig .

Braun works in different artistic forms of expression: installations, objects, photography and painting. He includes the title, room installation and catalog design in his exhibition concepts. In his work he repeatedly used handicraft techniques such as painting plates, batik and glass blowing. He designed the conference room for the G8 summit in Cologne in 1999 with specially designed furniture.

Braun is inspired by places in his work. He named his first exhibition in Cologne after the Finnish town of Jussila, where his maternal family came from. Traditional Finnish ornaments can be found in the exhibition on painted plates. In the title of his exhibition "Öz Urfa" (German: true Urfa) Braun cited the city of Urfa in southeastern Anatolia. The cultural entanglements and myths of Urfa formed the basis of the exhibition concept.
