Life

Riepenhausen and his brother John Riepenhausen learned first with his father Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen , and later with the table leg on the Academy to Kassel , from 1805 in Dresden and since 1807 in Italy, especially after Raphael and chose Rome to its permanent location.

Chalk drawings of Goethe'sFaust I ”, Schiller's “Taucher” and his “Fight with the Dragon”, depictions from the life of Charlemagne and many pictures of religious content belong to this period. In 1822 they completed the story of Saint Elizabeth for the Duke of Cambridge and a replica of Raphael's Transfiguration . In 1825 the brothers painted the large oil painting "Heinrich the Lion" for the hall of the Guelph Order in Hanover, protecting Emperor Friedrich I against the assassination attack of the Romans when he left St. Peter's Church .

Together with his brother Johannes, Franz Riepenhausen published a “History of Painting in Italy”. In it they gathered 24 outlines based on the Italian masters before Perugino , a number of outlines based on Pausanias ' description of the polygnotic paintings in the Lesche der Knidier at Delphi (32 sheets) and 16 sheets of etchings from Ludwig Tieck's “Genoveva”.

Franz died on January 3, 1831 after converting to Catholicism.
