Life

Anton Wilhelm Tischbein was born the son of a master baker. His four older brothers were also painters, including the important Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder . His first teacher was the older brother Johann Valentin Tischbein . In 1753 he enrolled at the Academy in The Hague , which enjoyed international renown even as the Baroque was drawing to a close .

In 1758 Anton Wilhelm entered the court service as secretary to Count Christian August von Solms-Laubach . In 1769 he moved to Hanau as court painter to Hereditary Prince Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel , where from 1772 he worked as a member and teacher in the establishment of the State Drawing Academy .

The "Hanauer Tischbein" not only painted the family members of his princely lord, but also worked for wealthy patricians from the imperial city of Frankfurt, for example for Johann Christian Senckenberg or for the Brentano and La Roche families . He never let the connection to Laubach be severed completely. In addition, historical paintings with mythological content and mostly small-format cabinet pieces were created . As a building painter, Anton Wilhelm decorated the Wilhelmsbad pleasure palace near Hanau. Nevertheless, portraits make up his main work.

Several works by Anton Wilhelm Tischbein are shown in the permanent exhibition of the Historisches Museum Hanau in Philippsruhe Palace .
