Tony Oursler

Toni Oursler (* 1957 in New York / USA ) is an American photographer , video and installation artist .

Life

Tony Oursler was born in Manhattan and grew up in Nyack , Rockland County , not far from Edward Hopper's birthplace and home . He studied at Rockland Community College, Suffern, New York, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts , Valencia in 1979 . In 1977 he founded the punk band Poetic with Mike Kelley , which existed until 1983 and whose history he documented at Documenta X in Kassel . In the 1980s and 1990s he worked closely with the performance artist Constance DeJong . With her and Stephen Vitiello he realized the multi-year project Fantastic Prayers . In 1996 he was awarded the Arnold Bode Prize of the documenta city of Kassel.

He is married to the painter Jacqueline Humphries and lives and works in a house on Henry Street in Manhattan, New York .

Oursler is best known for his dummies . Using video projectors, he projects faces or entire bodies onto “dolls” - stuffed amorphous objects - and combines them with theatrical monologues.

He created the video for David Bowie's single Where Are We Now? (published January 8, 2013).
