Karl-Ernst Bungenstab

Karl-Ernst Bungenstab (born June 21, 1939 in Oberauerbach ; † August 25, 2021 ) was a German university professor , local and cultural politician.

Life

Karl-Ernst Bungenstab grew up as the second of four children. His father Karl Bungenstab (1905–1999) was a mining engineer, his mother Mathilde Bungenstab (1908–2003), née Büttner, was a ceramist. After the escape of the family from Silesia and consequent multiple changes of location in the postwar period Bunge Rod completed his schooling in 1960 at math and science high school in Wuppertal - Vohwinkel . As a schoolboy he was involved in the youth organization of the FDP , of which he was a member until 1994. After beginning his studies in the summer semester 1960 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , he continued his studies with the subjects history and political scienceOtto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin and graduated in 1964 with a diploma. He spent the academic year 1965/1966 as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Kansas in Lawrence (USA). He used this time, among other things, to study the sources of his dissertation on the subject of "American re-education policy in Germany after 1945", which he submitted to the Philosophical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin in 1968 under the supervision of Kurt Sontheimer . Ernst Fraenkel wrote a three-page preface for the publication of his dissertation in Bertelsmann Universitätsverlag .

Bungenstab began his professional career in 1964/1965 as a consultant to the Cultural Affairs Officer of the US Mission Berlin. After returning from the United States in 1966, he was a brief press officer and then until 1971 program director of the America House in Hanover. In addition to his function at the Amerikahaus, he was the initiator and director of the Hanover Study Center of the Kalamazoo College Foreign Study Program ( Kalamazoo , Michigan, USA) with a teaching position for history and political science.

Subsequently, he was head of the “Basics of Vocational Adult Education” department for two years at the then newly founded Federal Institute for Vocational Training Research (BBF) in Berlin. In connection with this function, Bungenstab was co-founder, publisher and editor of the loose-leaf collection “Fundamentals of Further Education” together with Helmut Keim and Dietrich Urbach. In 1973 he was appointed professor at the newly established University of Applied Sciences for Administration and Justice in Berlin .

From 1975 to 1993 Bungenstab was head of the cultural department of the state capital Hanover . In accordance with the current business distribution plan among the municipal department heads, he was also temporarily responsible for the sports and swimming pools, zoological garden and congress center departments . He was a member and worked in management positions in cultural and cultural-political professional associations, including as chairman of the regional association north and member of the board of directors of the German stage association (1979 to 1992), as chairman of the art association Hanover (1975 to 1991), as a co-founder of the working group of the cultural departments of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt (1977 to 1993). From 1994 Bungenstab worked independently for commercial enterprises and as a specialist advisor for municipalities and cultural institutions.

Private

Karl-Ernst Bungenstab was married for the second time and had two daughters and a son. He died in late August 2021 at the age of 82.
