biography

Hermanns was born the son of the actress Clara Behrens (1840-?) And the opera singer Joseph Hermanns (1818-1897). The father celebrated as an opera singer v. a. successes in the USA . He grew up with his grandparents first in Celle and later in Hanover and attended the secondary school here .

In 1878 he began to learn the profession of actor. As a part-time job he made menu cards with drawings and watercolors for more than eight years for the Berlin company AW Faber . He then turned entirely to painting without receiving any special training; he deliberately remained self-taught and only relied on his great talent. Hermanns oriented himself on his role models, the painters Eduard Hildebrandt and Hans von Bartels .

In 1888 he moved to Munich as a freelance artist . But he did not find a connection here and returned to Celle four years later. In 1898 he moved to Hanover. He founded a relatively good painting and drawing school here. Hermanns only became known when the Duke of Cumberland bought two paintings from him. After that he also received public contracts and his economic situation improved. Also Hermann Lons was one of his admirers, and praised in 1899 one of his exhibitions.

Work

The North German Plain and here in particular the Lüneburg Heath was the landscape that he preferred to paint. He was fascinated by the largely untouched and undestroyed landscape. Hermanns made pencil drawings with motifs of the heather in the change of the day and seasons, and cityscapes, including Paris and Hanover. There are also numerous watercolors by him that he created very flat. Later he also turned to oil painting . At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, some North Sea motifs were created.

Hermanns traveled a lot. Among others to England , Scotland , Italy and Greece . He first made sketches from which the paintings were later created in the studio . But he was particularly drawn to Paris. Here he captured street life in many drawings . In his autobiography he wrote in 1918

Despite war and war cries I have to confess that I owe Paris the deepest suggestions for my development. "
