Hiwa K (* 1975 in Sulaimaniyya , Kurdistan ) is a Kurdish installation artist who has lived in Germany as an emigrant since 1999.

life and work

Hiwa K already dealt with European literature and philosophy in Iraq . He moved to Germany, studied music with the flamenco guitarist Paco Peña and worked as a professional guitarist before turning back to the fine arts. The basis of his works are personal biographies, stories or everyday situations with which the artist exercises fundamental institutional criticism.

“In his uniquely combined autobiographical constructs, in which political and historical events form the background for performative interventions, collaborative projects and installations, the urgency and energy of Hiwa K's artistic practice is clearly expressed. He often uses music as an instrument to generate another dimension of criticism in today's complex society. This honest and novel approach to current issues makes Hiwa K one of the most exciting contemporary artists. "

My Father's Color Periods is a video installation set in the Kurdish part of Iraq in 1979. The installation consists of used black-and-white screens covered with colored foils. The starting point for this installation is that, in contrast to the inhabitants of the Arab regions, who had color televisions in 1979, the inhabitants of the Kurdish regions contented themselves with black and white television . Hiwa K's father took on the color design of the domestic television in a private setting by covering it with colored foil, varying it and dividing it into different color zones.

Hiwa K. lives in Berlin .
