The HW & J. Hector Art Prize of the Kunsthalle Mannheim , shortly Hectorpreis is a German art contest prize . It has been advertised every three years by the Kunsthalle Mannheim and the HW & J. Hector Foundation since 1997 .

background

With the Hector Prize and the Hector Sponsorship Prizes, which were awarded at the same time, the founders tie in with the Baden-Württemberg Youth Art Prize and the Young Art Forum competition from 1959 to 1973 . The external reason for the new foundation was the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Mannheim Kunsthalle. In line with the focus of the Kunsthalle's collection, the prize honors and promotes artists who work in the three-dimensional field of sculpture, object art and room installation. The prerequisites for the art award are an age up to 35 years and a place of residence in Germany.

The prize and sponsorship award are endowed with a total of 40,000 euros (as of 2009); purchases for the Kunsthalle Mannheim are connected with the prize money. The winners and the shortlisted candidates for the sponsorship award will be honored in exhibitions in the Kunsthalle.

In 2009 and 2012, the Hector Prize, which was founded as a sponsorship prize for young artists, was expanded to include an art prize for an already established artist. In 2015, the renovation of the art gallery resulted in a smaller exhibition area. In this particular situation, the prize is limited and focused on its core: honoring a young artistic position supported by a presentation in the museum.

In 2015, the selection process went back to the beginnings of the Hector Prize in the 1990s: As then, there was also a selection committee in 2014/15 made up of art college professors, curators and art critics, who could each submit a proposal. The jury chose the winner from this group.

After 2015, the next award was not made until 2019 as the Hector Prize with an endowment of 10,000 euros according to the official website or 20,000 euros according to another publication.
