He lives and works in Brandenburg. Sasse studied as a master student with Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. There he had a teaching position from 1988 to 1989 . This was followed by various projects and lectures at various universities. From 2003 Sasse was professor for documentary photography at the University of Duisburg-Essen (today Folkwang University of the Arts ), which he left at his own request after five years of teaching.
Jörg Sasse is not a photographer in the traditional sense. Photographs of others from very different and accidental sources such as photo albums (buying up estates) and flea markets serve as templates that serve as the basis for new pictures. Sasse conducts this process of collaging and changing on the computer. Jörg Sasse changes a large number of the found elements of the photographs: detail, perspective, color, sharpness, etc. The result is images whose origin is often no longer recognizable. You present a perfect new reality, but one that has leaps and bounds. In his play with reality or the photographically portrayed reality, Sasse succeeds in creating irritations for the viewer on closer inspection that arise from contradictions between everyday experience and perception (e.g. by seemingly canceling the central perspective). As a rule, Sasse generates the image titles as four-digit number combinations, so that references to the objects in the photograph used are missing, as are references to an intended new object.
In his photographic work, Sasse deals with everyday life, the everyday culture that is depicted in the works of amateur photographers. The starting point was the early beginning of a collection of amateur photographs, as well as the everyday interiors, details and shop windows that had been self- photographed since the 1980s . In view of the possibilities of computer technology, he finally concentrated increasingly on editing other people's photographs from around 1990 onwards, and in 1993 he published his first picture created in this way, a so-called “tableau”.
In 2004 he presented his “sketches” for the first time, digitally processed recordings in smaller formats. He calls the works that arise from sketches “tableaus”; they have been the focus of his work since the 1990s. These are large-format pictures, some of which are heavily alienated and move away from dealing with everyday life (see the poster on Sasse's portrait, which shows an excerpt from one of his tableaus). They are characterized by a kind of painterly component.
Sasse's first time in 2008 in the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris exhibited work memory I is a three-dimensional sculpture, which includes 512 images. The work is the analogization of a complex digital database, which makes it possible to create the most varied of hanging walls for 56 different categories. The work has been on view in its own room at the Kunstmuseum Bonn since 2010 .
The memory II , who in Essen as part of the first time RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture has been shown also includes 512 images. However, the raw material for Speicher II comes entirely from the Ruhr area from the years between the mid-1950s and 2009.
In addition to the “Tableaus”, the series “Lost Memories” has been created since 2009, the photographic origin of which is not immediately apparent. As with the “tableaus”, all decisions about the image are made in the process during processing on the computer. The memory of something seen before, often created in other works, is transferred in the "Lost Memories" to the tension between the perception of photographic color spaces and the associations connected with organic structures.
Jörg Sasse was a member of the German Association of Artists . His pictures are in the possession of numerous collections. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York has two pictures of him and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt has one of his pictures. The Deutsche Börse Group collection contains four works by Sasse.
