history

Art Association in Dreisamstrasse

The Kunstverein Freiburg, founded in 1827, is one of the oldest art associations in Germany. Around 1914 the association had 600 members with a population of 85,000. At the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, the association primarily dealt with classical modernism . From September 2 to October 4, 1916, the exhibition "Adolf Hölzel and his circle" took place in the Kunsthalle on Friedrichstrasse. In addition to pictures by Hölzel , works by Oskar Schlemmer , Willi Baumeister , Johannes Itten , Ida Kerkovius and others were on view. Conceived as a traveling exhibition, the works could only be seen in Frankfurt am Main due to the war . Today the association shows around five to eight major exhibitions of contemporary art a year, organizes lectures and other educational offers and organizes art trips.

In 2008 the art association had a good 500 members and an annual budget of almost 180,000 euros. The director of the Kunstverein was Stephan Berg from 1990 to 2000 , then Dorothea Strauss , who was replaced by Felicity Lunn in 2005. Caroline Käding headed the art association from 2008 to 2016. Heinrich Dietz is currently the director, who previously worked as a curator at the Kestnergesellschaft and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve.

Art Gallery

For many years the art association resided in changing accommodations, including in the Grand Ducal Palace, in the old St. Ursula school building, in the former Hauptwache on Münsterplatz and then on Karlsplatz. During the First World War , Freiburg was constantly bombed and many public buildings were converted into military hospitals, including in 1915 the skylight hall of the Kunstverein on Karlsplatz, which was provisionally built from wood in 1896. Therefore, under his long-time chairman August Gruber, the construction of an art gallery was promoted. Three donors - the factory owner Adolf Mez, the wine merchant, landowner and Reichstag deputy Josef Hebting and the dentist Karl Günther - had contributed fortunes to foundations for the benefit of a new building that had meanwhile grown to 100,000 marks . Initially, construction was to take place next to the AOK on Fahnenbergplatz, but then it ended up on Friedrichstrasse (today Friedrichring) as a building plot. But there were also critical voices criticizing the felling of old trees, among other things. The winner of a competition was the design by the Freiburg architect Rudolf Schmid . 95,000 Marks were fixed as the construction cost, and 5,000 Marks were added later for subsequent requests such as a basement. During the war there was construction and on December 15, 1915 the dome was opened on the spot where the Victory Monument stood until 2016 . It was destroyed on November 27, 1944 . From 1948 to 1953, the youth welfare organization used the provisionally prepared ground floor before the art gallery was demolished.

Marienbad

In 1997 the association moved into Marienbad on Dreisamstrasse. The main exhibition space is the former large swimming pool with its surrounding gallery , which with an area of 400 m² with a ceiling height of nine meters and exposure through a large skylight offers space for large installations. The original Marienbad is an Art Nouveau building based on a design by the Freiburg architect Joseph Ruh, and is now used as a venue by the Freiburg children's and youth theater . The Great Hall was built in 1938 as an extension on the neighboring property and is now home to the Art Association.
