Rob Pruitt: The Andy Monument

Rob Pruitt grew up in Rockville . After studying at Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, he continued his education at the Parsons School of Design in New York. At Corcoran College he met Jack Early; they had their first joint exhibition in 1990, Artworks for Teenage Boys , which the critics call sexist. The collaboration ended in 1992 after the exhibition Red, Black, Green Red, White, and Blue at the Leo Castelli Gallery , which met with severe criticism with allegations of racism. The crash followed, because nobody wanted to exhibit Early-Pruitt anymore. It wasn't until 1997 that Pruitt was able to regain a foothold in the art world. In 1998 he received a lot of attention with the Cocaine Buffet ; he drew a five-meter line of cocaine on a mirror on the floor of a loft. The New York art scene went to its knees. A year later he wrote 101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself in one month , ideas that provide recipes for an artfully fun life and scoff at the strict conceptual art .

From 2000 he put his preference for panda bears into practice and created shiny silver works with their images. At an exhibition in 2010 at Gavin Brown's enterprise, he showed works in the form of quilts , which are influenced by the Amish tradition, under the title Pattern and Degradation .

Pruitt, who is an admirer of Andy Warhol , created The Andy Monument , a larger than life, chrome-plated statue that was unveiled in Union Square on March 30, 2011 . It is the place in front of the building that Warhol used as a factory in the 1970s and early 1980s . In the fall of 2012, it was moved to the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston , Texas , where it remained for six months after being unveiled on October 20.

In 2012, in the exhibition Rob Pruitt - History of the World, the Kunstverein Freiburg showed an installation in the exhibition hall with black dinosaurs made of fiberglass, which had been produced by a supplier for regional natural history museums. They looked at large-format oil paintings depicting untidy rooms of people suffering from messie syndrome . In this way, the exhibition showed the history of the world and the artist's preference for the connection between painting and sculptural installation.

Since 2012 the artist has been under contract with the designer of shoes, handbags and small leather goods Jimmy Choo for the 2013 Collection.
