Kyungwoo Chun

Kyungwoo Chun (* 1969 in Seoul , South Korea ) is a Korean artist. His work includes photo projects and performances in which the audience actively participates. He studied photography at the College of Arts at Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea (until 1992) and communication design at the University of Wuppertal (Diploma 2000). Since 2007 he has been Professor of Photography at Chung-Ang University in Seoul. He lives and works in Seoul, Korea.

Chun achieved international recognition for portraits, many of which have a characteristic blurring - the result of long exposure times. As diverse as the artistic approaches appear at first glance, Chun equally regards both the performances and the photographs as “visible manifestations of what is not visible”.

Since the early 2000s, performance works have been created parallel to photography. These are time-limited processes that he carries out with individuals or groups. As an author and initiator, Kyungwoo Chun largely takes a back seat. It creates a framework in which the participants can act independently according to rules that they have defined in advance. You usually have the option to leave something of your own. Sometimes it's a personal item, a photo, or just the answer to a question. In other cases, their physical presence is sufficient.

The sensitization for a changed perception of time and the intensification of the dialogue with oneself and with others are essential aspects of this artistic practice.
