Pierce O'Leary (born November 5, 1959 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player .

Career

Pierce O'Leary was born in Dublin in 1959 . He began his football career in 1977 with the Shamrock Rovers . With the Rovers he won the 1978 Irish Cup in the final against the Sligo Rovers . In the second half of the year, the defensive player played for Philadelphia Fury in the North American Soccer League . Then he returned to Dublin. After three seasons, O'Leary moved to Canada to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the NASL. When NASL was dissolved in 1984 and the Whitecaps ceased operations, he moved to Celtic Glasgow in November 1984 for £ 50,000 . He made his debut on January 30, 1985 against Hamilton Academical in the Cup. With Celtic he won the championship and the cup once in the following four years . Overall, O'Leary played for the Bhoys in 51 games (40 league games) and scored 7 goals (1 league goal). At the end of the 1987/88 season he ended his career.

Pierce O'Leary completed seven international matches for the Irish national football team during his time with Shamrock Rovers from 1979 to 1980 .

Pierce O'Leary is the younger brother of the former soccer player David O'Leary, who played over 700 competitive games for Arsenal between 1975 and 1993 . His son Ryan O'Leary (* 1987) is also a professional footballer.
