The Ponikauhaus in Kempten

On January 6, 1870, 22 citizens of Kempten founded a savings and advance payment association for handicrafts, small businesses and local trade. This savings and advance payment association had set itself the economic goal of accumulating cooperative assets and, in an emergency, granting members interest-bearing advances. Due to the cumbersome system for granting advances, a commission was set up in March 1911 to prepare for banking operations. In October 1916 the business was relocated to the Ponikauhaus on Rathausplatz. In order to make it known to the outside world that the savings and advance payment association had become a bank, in 1922 it decided on the name Genossenschaftsbank Kempten.

Starting with the currency reform in 1948 , the free market economy developed. Savings deposits were kept within modest limits, but demand for credit set in strong as the recovery went on. As a result, the business volume of the cooperative bank increased steadily. On April 13, 1962, the general assembly decided on the uniform company name Volksbank Kempten eGmbH. In 1971 Volksbank Kempten eGmbH and Allgäuer Volksbank Sonthofen eG merged to form Allgäuer Volksbank eG Kempten-Sonthofen.

Allgäuer Volksbank Sonthofen

On January 13, 1889, around 50 business people from Sonthofen and the surrounding towns founded the Sonthofen advance payment association. The first shop was in a room of the "Deutsches Haus" inn. On October 28, 1894, the association decided to build its own house. The property on Promenadestrasse, on which the bank still stands today, was auctioned in November 1894. After construction began in 1899, the new bank building was moved into in May 1900. At the same time it was renamed Genossenschaftsbank Sonthofen.

In 1919 a branch was set up in Oberstdorf and on May 1, 1922 a paying office in Fischen. A bomb attack at noon on February 22, 1945 destroyed the bank building almost completely. The business premises were relocated to the Mangoldsche estate on Marktstrasse. In 1948, the Supervisory Board dealt with the reconstruction and decided on February 27 to build a new bank building at the old location. The name was changed from Genossenschaftbank Sonthofen to Allgäuer Volksbank eG in May 1955.

Due to the settlement of the Bosch company, a branch was opened in Blaichach in 1960 . In 1971, Allgäuer Volksbank Sonthofen eG and Volksbank Kempten eGmbH merged to form Allgäuer Volksbank eG Kempten-Sonthofen.
