Kjetil Ruthford Pedersen (born May 22, 1973 in Kristiansand ) is a former Norwegian football player and coach . He is currently (2018) working in business, but also coaches the U19 team from Vigør, a team from Kristiansand.

His younger brother Steinar Pedersen was also a soccer player and soccer coach. He was under contract with Borussia Dortmund and IFK Göteborg , among others . Most recently (until September 2017) he was a trainer at Start Kristiansand . Father Erik was also a goalkeeper at Start Kristiansand for many years. Later he was a goalkeeping coach for many years and twice head coach in the same club.

Club career

Career start

Pedersen began his career in the youth of the traditional Kristiansander club FK Vigør , before moving to the then first division club IK Start at the youth level . When he was not taken into account in the professional squad at the start, he moved to the then second division Mjølner FK for the 1994 season .

At Mjølner he became a regular player, played his first 20 professional games and just managed to stay in the league when he was tenth in the table. In 1995 he left Mjølner again after a season and moved to the bigger Odd Ballklubb within the league . He was also able to establish himself as a regular player with the promotion aspirants, also scored his first three professional goals, but clearly missed promotion to the Tippeligaen with the club .

However, his good performance led to the next career jump with a change to the then first division club Molde FK . There he initially acted as a back-up for the regular defenders Knut Anders Fostervold and Petter Christian Singsaas , before he and Trond Andersen had longer periods of play due to the big fluctuations in form of the two veterans . Due to the commitment of Pål Lydersen for the following season, however, his chances of playing dwindled again, as coach Åge Hareide forced the more versatile Andersen next to Lydersen and Singsaas.

After half a year with only one league assignment for Molde, he then moved again within the league to bottom table Skeid Oslo . In the team studded with talents like Morten Berre , Freddy dos Santos or Christer George , he regained a regular place in central defense in the final stages of the championship, but could no longer avert relegation as bottom of the table.

Years abroad

After relegation he left Skeid again and went abroad for the first time to the Swedish first division club IF Elfsborg . As one of a total of three legionnaires in a team mostly made up of Swedish talents like Anders Svensson or Tobias Linderoth , he subsequently formed the defensive line of IF together with Stefan Mogren and Kristoffer Arvhage . After two placements in the secured midfield, he did not extend his contract, which expired in winter 2000, and instead accepted an offer from the Austrian first division club LASK Linz .

At LASK, which was financially bad and threatened with relegation, he was signed to replace his compatriot Torgeir Bjarmann , who had returned home after his loan period due to an excessively high transfer fee.

Although the club with Pedersen, in addition to defense chief Wolfgang Feiersinger , showed a clear upward trend, they did not manage to stay in the league and for the first time after seven years went back to the second division. After relegation, Feiersinger, Geir Frigård , Željko Pavlović, the three most important leaders, left the club, whereupon Pedersen was assigned a major role in the LASK game. As a result, under the coaches Johann Kondert and František Cipro, he was one of the few top performers in a partly inferior team who clearly missed the goal of immediate promotion. In addition to the sporting failure, the club was still struggling with the aftermath of the "Rieger Affair" , as a result of which salaries, including that of Pedersen, were paid out with a significant delay. As a consequence he forced the release and moved to the traditional club Esbjerg fB in Denmark at the end of the season .

In Denmark he presented himself at his performance peak and together with Anders Møller Christensen formed one of the strongest defensive duos in the league for two years. After a fifth and a third place in the table, however, the call of home overtook him, whereupon he surprisingly switched to the elevator team Sogndal IL .

Career end

In addition to Sogndal, his hometown club IK Start , where at that time his brother Steinar and his father Erik Ruthford Pedersen were also under contract as goalkeeping coach, had shown great interest in a commitment, but due to the better offer he had decided to switch to decided the west of Norway.

As a result, he rose a second time in his career from bottom of the table in the second division , where he inherited the weak Håvard Flo as captain. As a result, he played a strong defensive boss in 28 season appearances, but did not manage to get promoted again with the club due to a strong bloodletting with table position seven.

In 2006 he returned home to the IK Start, one and a half years late, where he was part of a team with brother Steinar for the first time in his professional career.

Meanwhile 33 years old, the return turned out to be the greatest disappointment of his career. Neither under coach Tom Nordlie , nor under his successor Stig Inge Bjørnebye , he was able to establish himself as a regular player and was not used in any league game from the start. At the end of the season his contract was then dissolved and Pedersen moved to the Adeccoligaen, where he signed a contract as a player- coach with FK Mandalskameratene . Despite Pedersen's outstanding season with eleven goals, he was then relegated to the third division with the club as the last, whereupon he ended his active career.
