Douglas Edward "Eddie" Alexander Gustafsson McIntosh (born January 31, 1977 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a former Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2000 , has played in Sweden, Norway and Austria throughout his career so far.

Career

Career start in Sweden

Soon after Gustafsson moved to Sweden with his family, he started playing football in 1983 when he joined IFK Stockholm . At the capital club he went through the youth teams and played in the various junior national teams of Svenska Fotbollförbundet . In the mid-1990s, he moved to the squad of the men's team of his home club as a substitute goalkeeper. In the 1994 season he made his adult debut in the third division Division 2 Östra Sveland when the club was relegated to fourth division.

However, Gustafsson had drawn attention to himself as a talented young goalkeeper. Before the start of the first division season in 1995 he joined the IFK Norrköping in the Allsvenskan and was a substitute goalkeeper in the following years. In the 1998 season he became a regular goalkeeper before an injury slowed him down. After the departure of the Norwegian Thor André Olsen , who was obliged as a substitute on loan, in mid-1999, he ousted the also newly committed Thórdur Thórdarsson and established himself again as the club's regular goalkeeper. At the same time he played his way into the circle of the national team and made his debut on January 31, 2000 in the 1-0 success over the selection of Denmark in the jersey of the national team.

Although Gustafsson was at the side of players like Kristian Bergström , Jonas Wallerstedt , Fredrik Bild and Mathias Florén in the seasons 2000 and 2001 , he was not able to establish himself in the national team because the competition with Magnus Kihlstedt , Mattias Asper and Magnus Hedman was too big. Nevertheless, he had made a name for himself outside the country's borders.

Years abroad

After the end of the 2001 season , Gustafsson left Sweden and moved to Norway to Molde FK , who was in charge of his compatriot Gunder Bengtsson and who signed two other Swedes in the same year with David Ljung and Fredrik Gustafson . At the end of the Tippeligaen season in 2002 , he ran aground in the 25 league games, he qualified with the club as runners behind series champion Rosenborg BK for the European Cup . Therefore, he returned to the national team in the spring of 2003 and played two internationals, but was again unable to establish himself in the national team in the long term. In the two following seasons he could not build on the success from his debut season in Norway with Molde FK. With Arild Stavrum , Magnus Kihlberg , Petter Rudi and Marcus Andreasson he occupied places in the lower midfield of the table and was in danger of relegation in the 2004 season .

After his contract with Molde FK expired at the end of 2004, Gustaffson completed trial training sessions in Europe and North America, but eventually moved to Ham-Kam within the Tippeligaen to replace the injured goalkeeper Svein Inge Haagenrud . At the side of Axel Smeets , Espen Olsen , Rune Buer Johansen , Ramiro Corrales and Jan Michaelsen , he played with the club against relegation from the Tippeligaen, which was avoided as tenth in the 2005 season . He then moved on within the Norwegian elite series and signed a contract with Lyn Oslo . As part of a Swedish quintet, he met Johan Dahlin , who was originally signed as a substitute goalkeeper, Henrik Dahl , Daniel Theorin and Magnus Powell . At the start of the season, Dahlin pushed him between the posts, so Gustafsson's chances of participating in the 2006 World Cup were limited. It was only after the summer break that he established himself in the goal of the capital city club in July and played alongside Chinedu Obasi , Tommy Berntsen and Steven Lustü . In the 2007 and 2008 seasons, he occupied with the club places in the midfield of the league. In 2008 he received after the end of the season as the best goalkeeper the kniksen award .

On January 8, 2009, Gustafsson's move to Red Bull Salzburg was announced to replace the injured Timo Ochs . He suffered a hematoma on his thigh after six games and was out for a few games. After his return to the football field in May, he won the championship title with the team led by Co Adriaanse around Rémo Meyer , Marc Janko and Johan Vonlanthen . As team captain , he led the club, which competes internationally under the name FC Salzburg , through the qualifying rounds of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League . After successes over Bohemians Dublin and Dinamo Zagreb , he failed with the club after two defeats against Maccabi Haifa in the play-offs, but qualified for the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League . After he had accrued in all six games of the Champions League qualification, he contributed as a support for reaching the knockout phase in the European Cup. The team remained in the group stage against Lazio Rome , Villarreal and Levski Sofia without losing points, only in the games against the club from Rome he conceded one goal. In the sixteenth finals, however, he was eliminated from the competition after a 2: 3 away defeat and a 0-0 draw against Standard Liège with the club.

Gustafsson was also a sure goalkeeper in the championship. As a regular player, he helped the club to establish itself in first place during the season. On April 18, 2010 he was seriously injured in a 0-0 away draw against LASK Linz by a foul by Lukas Kragl . He suffered a shin and a multiple fracture of the fibula . The healing process was so good that he was able to accompany the team to the decisive championship game in Graz on May 13, 2010 and at the end celebrate the championship with his teammates. As captain of FC Red Bull Salzburg, he received the championship plate from league president Hans Rinner. On January 19, 2011, he prematurely extended his contract with Red Bull by 4 years and on January 20, he was back in goal for the team for the first time after his injury in the preparatory game against Spartak Moscow in Belek. On March 2, 2011 he returned in the Bundesliga away game against SV Kapfenberg in the goal of the Bundesliga team and played his first game in front of his own audience on March 5, 2011 against SV Mattersburg.

In the 2011/12 season, however, he was unable to continue his performances from the time before his injury. After a few mistakes he lost his regular place to Alexander Walke . In the 2012/13 season he managed to reach the goalkeeper position again as Alexander Walke showed some uncertainties.

In the 2013/14 season, he played his last game on May 4, 2014 in the home game against SV Ried. In minute 76 he was exchanged for Péter Gulácsi and the spectators said goodbye with a standing ovation.
