Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen
Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen (* December 2, 1670 in Gandersheim ; † February 12, 1739 in Halle (Saale) ) was a theologian of the pietistic Hallesche Schule and, as a pupil and successor of August Hermann Francke , who was also his father-in-law, the second director of Francke Foundations .
Life
Freylinghausen studied theology in Jena, got to know Joachim Justus Breithaupt , was won over by August Hermann Francke in Halle for Pietism , and in 1695 became his assistant in the ministry in Glaucha. When Francke took over the pastorate at St. Ulrich in 1715 , Freylingshausen followed him there as an assistant. In 1727 he succeeded Francke as pastor in the St. Ulrich's Church. In 1739 he died in Halle as pastor of Ortisei and director of the orphanage and education center.
In addition to his administrative work, Freylinghausen's importance lies primarily in the field of hymnology . He composed 44 sacred songs himself, but organized several larger song collections. His witty hymn book with 1500 older and newer sacred songs became widely known as Freylinghausen's hymn book . Since the first part was published in 1704, it has seen several editions in quick succession and has shaped a whole generation of hymn books. In this hymn book four sacred songs by JJ Breithaupt were published. In the Evangelical Hymn book under EG 356 there is the song Es ist in no other Heil, no name otherwise given, a song by Freylinghausen, for which he wrote the text of the first stanza.
His Foundation of Theology has been widely read and published fourteen times by 1744.
Since 1715 he was married to Francke's daughter, his own goddaughter, Johanna Sophia Anastasia Francke (1697–1771), 27 years his junior. The couple had a son, Gottlieb Anastasius Freylinghausen , who later also became director of the orphanage, and two daughters. One of them was Auguste Sophie (1717–1763), who married Johann Konrad Philipp Niemeyer (1711–1767), who was archdeacon in Halle. Theologians David Gottlieb and August Hermann Niemeyer were among their children . Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen was buried in the Halle Stadtgottesacker (arch 80/81) in the family crypt of August Hermann Francke.
The great hall in the Francke Foundations is named after him.
