Margarete Loewe , completely Margarete Caroline Philippine Agnes Loewe , also Margarethe Loewe-Bethe (born May 30, 1854 on Gut Schollendorf , district of Groß Wartenberg , Province of Silesia ; †  August 20, 1932 in Leipzig ), was a German history , portrait and Genre painter as well as graphic artist and etcher at the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Margarete Loewe was born in May 1854 as the daughter of the manor owner Karl Loewe (1826–1862) and his wife Agnes, née Gericke-Luck (born May 4, 1833 in Stettin), on Gut Schollendorf. Between 1872 and 1882 she studied painting as a private student of the Düsseldorf painters Wilhelm Sohn and Eduard Gebhardt . She settled in Düsseldorf as a painter and took part in various exhibitions from 1878 to 1896. In addition to painting, she also worked with graphic techniques as an etcher and modeled small sculptures. An illustration of her painting Auf der Landpartie appeared in the magazine Die Gartenlaube in 1885 .

She worked as a portrait painter in the university environment, in 1895 she created a portrait of the Rostock university professor Reinhold Bechstein , who died the year before, and in 1928 a portrait of the former Leipzig university rector Max Le Blanc .

On August 2, 1894, Loewe married the classical philologist Erich Bethe in Düsseldorf . She died in Leipzig in August 1932 at the age of 78. Her grave, designed by the sculptors Fritz Drechsler and Johannes Hartmann , is located in the Leipzig South Cemetery (Department II, University Discounts No. 132).
