Albrecht Bethe
Albrecht Theodor Julius Bethe (born April 25, 1872 in Stettin , † October 19, 1954 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German physiologist .
Life
Albrecht Bethe was the son of the Szczecin doctor Eduard Bethe († 1910) and his wife Marie Gerstaecker (* 1830; † 1917) from Berlin, a niece of the travel writer Friedrich Gerstäcker . His brother Erich Bethe became a classical philologist, his brother Martin Bethe became a doctor and also worked as a genealogist.
Bethe studied medicine at the Universities of Freiburg , Berlin and Strasbourg and graduated with a doctorate in Munich in 1895 . He then went to the University of Strasbourg as an assistant, where he worked at the Physiological Institute . In 1899 Bethe was able to complete his habilitation there in his specialist field of physiology .
In 1911 Bethe accepted a call from Kiel University as a full professor of physiology. He worked there until 1915 and then moved to Frankfurt am Main as director of the Physiological Institute in the Theodor Stern House at the University Clinic. In addition to his actual work, from 1918 he was the editor of Pflüger's archive . After 1937 by the Nazis with a professional disqualification was occupied, he was expelled from the university. In 1945 he was one of the first to be rehabilitated. He died in 1954 at the age of 82.
Albrecht Bethe is the father of Hans Bethe (1906–2005), theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize laureate for physics (1967).
Together with Gustav von Bergmann , Gustav Embden and Alexander Ellinger, he founded the manual of normal and pathological physiology , or Bethe-Embden for short, published by Springer-Verlag from 1926 to 1932 .
