Valentin Rost

Valentin Christian Friedrich Rost (born October 16, 1790 in Friedrichroda ; † August 6, 1862 in Gotha ) was a German classical philologist and lexicographer . His most important achievement is the revision of the concise dictionary of the Greek language by Franz Passow (1841–1857).

Life

Valentin Rost grew up in Friedrichroda. Despite his simple origins, he was able to attend the Illustre grammar school in Gotha from 1802 and study classical philology and theology at the University of Jena from 1810 . After completing his studies, he first worked as a private tutor, then from 1814 as a collaborator at the Gothaer Gymnasium. Since he mainly taught Greek, he dealt intensively with Greek grammar and lexicography in addition to teaching. In 1816 his Greek grammar appeared , which was last published in 1856 after numerous new editions (as a revision based on the findings of comparative linguistics ). He also published a German-Greek dictionary (1818), as well as a revision of the Homer and Pindar lexicons by Christian Tobias Damm (1699–1778).

In 1840, Rost began to publish its own Greek-German dictionary under the title Complete Lexicon of Classical Graecity . However, he broke off the project in favor of a revision of the concise dictionary of the Greek language by Franz Passow . The new (fifth) edition, overseen by Rost, Johann Friedrich Palm , Otto Kreussler, Karl Keil, Gustav Eduard Benseler and Ferdinand Peter, was published from 1841 to 1857. During the same period, Rost was director of the Gothaer Gymnasium Illustre . In 1859 Rost , who was honored with the title of a Secret High School Councilor, retired.

Rost found his final resting place in Gotha Cemetery II , but the grave is no longer preserved today. The city of Gotha honored him by naming a street, the Roststraße, west of the castle (today "Am Tivoli").
