Johann Matthias Stahl

Johann Matthias Stahl (born November 10, 1833 in Baasem , Schleiden district , † September 15, 1916 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German classical philologist .

Johann Matthias steel, the son of a guest and farmer, attended from 1846 to 1851 the high school in Münstereifel and then studied classical philology at the University of Bonn , where he on 11 March 1856 of the thesis Animadversiones ad Euripidis Phoenissas criticae doctorate was. He then worked as a grammar school teacher in Münstereifel (until 1861), Düren (until 1863) and Cologne, there first at the Apostelgymnasium , from 1868 as a senior teacher at the grammar school in Marzelle . In 1874 he was appointed professor of Greek language and literature at the Theological and Pedagogical Academy in Münster , where he taught until his retirement (March 31, 1906).

As a researcher, Stahl particularly emerged with his work on Greek syntax and the Greek historian Thucydides .
