Life

Peter Langen was the eldest son of a Cologne merchant. The future theologian Joseph Langen was one of his four younger siblings . After attending elementary school and grammar school at Marzellen , he went to the University of Bonn in the fall of 1853 to study classical philology. Among his academic teachers especially Friedrich Ritschl , Otto Jahn and Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker , along with Friedrich Heimsoeth , Leopold Schmidt , John Vahlen and Heinrichsbrunn . Towards the end of the eighth semester concluded Langen his studies and was awarded a dissertation on the accent teaching of Latin grammarians doctorate ( "summa cum laude"). In his dissertation, he provided evidence for the first time that Latin was already expiratory accentuated in ancient times . Despite the contradictions of the linguist Wilhelm Paul Corssen, this view became the communis opinio .

After graduating, Langen initially decided against an academic career and began his probationary year at the Cologne High School in Marzellen in the fall of 1857. In the fall of 1858 he was employed as a temporary teacher. Two years later he moved to a similar position in Koblenz, in 1862 to Trier, where he was appointed full teacher after one year. In autumn 1865 he switched to the high school in Düren as a senior teacher.

In addition to teaching at the grammar school, Langen continued his research on the Latin language and literature. Due to his teaching success and his scientific work, he was appointed full professor for Latin language and literature at the Theological and Pedagogical Academy in Münster in 1868 - without habilitation . His teaching activities encompassed all of ancient Latin literature, with a focus on Augustan and imperial literature; he also held lectures on Greek literature ( Aeschylus , Euripides , Theocritus ). Together with Franz Winiewski and his successor Johann Matthias Stahl , he led the Philological Seminar. He also wrote numerous works on Latin linguistics, Plautus and Cornificius .

Langen died at the age of 61 from complications from an ear disease.
