content

The SNES with inserted Super Mario All Stars module

The Super Mario All-Stars game collection contains the three well-known Super Mario Bros. games that appeared on the previous console and were extremely successful. The collection also includes Super Mario Bros .: The Lost Levels, known in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2, which was the first time this game was launched outside of Japan. It was originally only released in Japan, as the game's difficulty level was considered too difficult for a worldwide release, which is why Super Mario Bros. 2 was released outside of Japan. All four games at All-Stars have been heavily revised graphically and acoustically, but nothing has changed in terms of the game principle. The collection is supplemented by a selection menu and can also save the game status of the individual games. With the exception of Super Mario Bros .: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2, the games can also be played with two players.

Super Mario All-Stars sold a total of about 10.55 million times.

Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World

In December 1994, an expanded version of Super Mario All-Stars was released, also for the SNES. In addition to the four games of the normal All-Stars version, this version also contains the successful SNES game Super Mario World . The only difference between the original Super Mario World and the Super Mario World version included with this All-Stars version is a small adaptation of Luigi's Sprite . Also, the selection screen for this version is red instead of blue. This package appeared briefly as a bundle with the console.

Super Mario All-Stars - 25 Years: Anniversary Edition

In October and December 2010, respectively, Nintendo published on the occasion of Mario's 25th birthday - Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985 - Super Mario All-Stars - 25 Years: Anniversary Edition for the Nintendo Wii . This collection contains Super Mario All-Stars and in a second DVD case a soundtrack CD with ten well-known songs from the Mario games from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Galaxy 2 and ten well-known sound effects from Super Mario Bros. with a running time of about 25 minutes and a 32-page booklet with an overview of the history of Super Mario and comments from developers Shigeru Miyamoto , Takashi Tezuka and Koji Kondo . The latter, who has been responsible for the music in the Mario games since Super Mario Bros. , made the selection of the songs on the soundtrack CD.

reception

Due to the fact that this re-release contains exactly the same program as the collection from 1993, the reaction to the release was disappointed. As in 1993, the games run at 50 Hertz and not at 60 Hertz, it only runs in 4: 3 format, which provides bars on the left and right edge of the screen on widescreen televisions. In the game itself, the controller button assignment of the SNES is displayed and is called in the main menu it copyright 1993 . The four included games had already been available for the Wii via Virtual Console for some time , all four games cost a total of € 21 via VirtualConsole, while the anniversary edition is being sold for € 30. According to the critics, the price is acceptable in view of the extras, but a more extensive collection was more appropriate because of the anniversary. Nevertheless, the individual games are still very good.

The anniversary edition achieved an average rating of 69 out of 100 points on metacritic.com. The individual video game magazines praised the actual games that this collection contains, and this is a good option for Wii owners who cannot download the games via VirtualConsole. Nevertheless, Nintendo could have done more, the extras are not very special and the price is not entirely reasonable in view of this. On the other hand, others praise the extras and also think the price is okay, but they don't deny that Nintendo could have done more. Some players feared in advance that the booklet might be a mere meaningless advertising brochure, but the developers' comments reveal information that was previously unknown. Overall, players who already own the original All-Stars release or an original game are not advised to purchase.

As of March 2012, the anniversary edition had been sold around 2.53 million times.
