Haxtum is a district of the city of Aurich in East Frisia . It borders directly on the Aurich core city and, in terms of area, ranks second to last (before Popens ) among the Aurich districts. In terms of population, Haxtum is one of the medium-sized districts of Aurich with around 1,800 inhabitants. The district is traversed by the Ems-Jade Canal , which can be crossed on two bridges in the district area. On the south-eastern bank of the canal is the district of Haxtumerfeld, which was founded at the beginning of the 19th century as an extension.

structure

Together with Extum, Walle, Kirchdorf and Wallinghausen, Haxtum is one of the oldest settlements in the Auricherland . The name goes back to the nickname Haxte, connected with -heim, which in the course of time became -um - as in many places in northwestern Germany. Like today's neighboring district of Extum, Haxtum was first mentioned in a document in 1431.

Even before the regional reform in Lower Saxony , the four then independent communities of Extum, Haxtum, Rahe and Kirchdorf merged to form the Upstalsboom community in 1965. This lasted seven years, after which the named districts were incorporated into the city of Aurich on July 1, 1972. Due to its proximity to the center, Haxtum has grown significantly over the past four decades since the local government reform.

politics

Haxtum has a seven-member local council together with the districts of Extum , Kirchdorf and Rahe .

Local mayor is Antje Harms (SPD).

The school center of the district town is located in the districts of Extum and Haxtum. The largest educational institution is the Integrated Comprehensive School Aurich-West, with 1,800 students the largest comprehensive school in East Friesland. In addition, the Aurich vocational schools are located in the school center, one of two BBS locations in the district next to the north . In addition, there are two special schools in the school center with a focus on physical and motor development as well as learning. The Upstalsboom primary school for children in the districts of Haxtum, Extum, Rahe and Kirchdorf is not in the school center, but closer to the town center . In the transition area between Haxtum and the city center is the Aurich district adult education center .

traffic

The district is crossed by Landesstraße 2 (Aurich - Oldersum ). Agriculture is practiced in the rural Haxtumerfeld. One of the sights of Haxtum is the Haxtumer Mühle , built in 1885 . It is no longer used as such, but is a monument and serves as a land trade.
